Kinesiology Taping

Dr Kenzo Kase, a chiropractor, found that joint pain resulted from the abnormality of muscles and myo-facial tissues around the joint rather than from the joint itself.
He developed Kinesio Taping in the 1970’s to correct these abnormalities. For more information, please see this article.

Taping may help with:

  • normalising muscle function
  • improving lymphatic and blood flow
  • reduction and management of pain
  • correction of misaligned joints and tissues

How does Taping work?

  • By stretching a muscle, applying the tape to the stretched muscle and returning the muscle to a neutral position, the tape forms wrinkles or convolutions in the skin. This wrinkling effect appears to be an essential element in ensuring the effectiveness of the Taping Technique on muscles.
  • When a muscle is inflamed, swollen or stiff the space between the skin and muscle is compressed, which restricts the flow of lymphatic fluid. This compression applies pressure to the pain receptors beneath the skin, which in turn relays signals of discomfort to the brain resulting in the sensation of pain. By lifting the skin the space between the skin and the muscles increases, so the lymphatic fluid between the skin and muscles moves more effectively.

The Tape

  • The Tape has been widely used and no irritation of the skin has been reported.
  • The Tape can work for more than 4 or 5 days.

How Taping works at the Practice

  • Our qualified staff will carry out Taping.
  • If you have come in for an Osteopathy treatment, our Osteopath will examine you and may recommend Taping if it is appropriate. There will be a small additional charge for the Taping.
  • Our Osteopaths may recommend a full session of Taping. This will involve a full examination and a full Taping treatment. This will be charged at the same rate as for an Osteopathy treatment.
